Sharing More Horizons Stories

Friday, September 12th, 2008

There is so much to be learned from other communities who have participated in Horizons. As much as we have learned and accomplished in South Dakota, the same has been happening in the other states involved in the project. Here is a link to the North Dakota group’s version of the tabloid, celebrating the successful completion of Horizons II in North Dakota. Great reading if you have some time.

Chicken Tractors??? Who Knew!

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

chicken.JPGI learn so much by attending our Horizons monthly meetings…for instance last night in Estelline I learned about Chicken Tractors, yes I said chicken tractors. One of the educational activites that Estelline has offered in their community is on the topic of Permaculture (permanent agriculture). One of the concepts they talked about using for their planned community garden was a chicken tractor.

It’s a simple, portable cage that you can move around the yard. The chickens eat the bugs and the weeds, and leave behind some “fertilizer.” Then you move them on to the next spot in the yard. Want to build your own chicken tractor? Click the link below for an example. I’m going to stick that little piece of information in my brain, just in case one day someone asks me, “do you know anything about chicken tractors, and I can say yep, I sure do!”

Final Monthly Blog Questions Sent!

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

To all of our community bloggers, one way we have been trying to capture the changes and progess made in your community is by asking you and others in your community to answer questions in the 12 categories defined by NWAF. Just today I sent our main community contacts the final two questions.

If you are an Administrator, you can check to see how many posts you have per category in the Dashboard. Just go to Manage>Posts> and click the drop down menu under the “Category” heading as seen in the example below. This will help you to see if you have any categories that may need a little “beefing up”. Questions, let Cheryl know by leaving a comment here or send me an e-mail.

Community Wellness Grant Opportunity…Deadline Nearing

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Here’s some information about grants available to communities from the Wellmark Foundation…

We are writing to share our 2008 Request for Proposals (RFP) for your review.  Please also feel free to contact us directly to discuss any project ideas you might like to advance through these funding opportunities. Our grant support will seek to support projects in childhood obesity prevention and community-based wellness and prevention.

There are several significant changes to the application process the RFP highlights around the introduction of a Letter of Interest, the ability to seek funding support for up to two-year project periods, and enhanced guidance around project budgeting.  We will be hosting an applicant teleconference on March 5th to further discuss these changes.  Call-in information is also highlighted within the RFP.  Please consider sharing this RFP with others throughout Iowa and South Dakota that you think might be interested or well positioned to seek funding support.

Thank you for your time and consideration.  Your assistance in sharing our funding opportunity is greatly appreciated.

Here is the link to the Grant RFP. Letters of interest are due April 2, 2008 and August 21, 2008.

Thanks to Dan Oedekoven, Horizons Community Coordinator for passing along the information!

What Do You Need Help With?

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Many of our communities are adding more new users, and trying to manage the blogs. We really appreciate the work and commitment that many of you are giving to your community. I have been responding to individual troubleshooting, and am always willing to do so. But we want to help you make this a positive experience for your communities, so you need to tell us what you need from us. We’d love some feedback, suggestions, requests for training etc. from your communities about the blogs. So if you have a suggestion, please leave a comment here, or pass it on to your Community Coordinator. Thanks for all you do for your community!

Murdo is Looking for Input…Can Your Community Help?

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Here’s a question from the bloggers in Murdo…

Does your community have a Chamber of Commerce?  Murdo bloggers are looking for suggestions on how to get current members to attend and get more involved in the monthly meetings.  We have been discussing this situation on our blog and would like other Horizon communities to share their ideas with us either here on the South Dakota site or on the Murdo blog site.  As Dan O. would say…..”Two heads are not enough!”   :-)

Leave a comment here, or go to the Murdo post on this topic at Chamber Meetings-Why Don’t Members Attend?

What’s an Extension Extra you ask? It’s a short publication on a variety of topics from the SDSU Cooperative Extension Service. There are several available on our Community Leadership Development website, including two new topics, hot off the presses:

Leadership for Today: Effective Group Communications

Leadership for Today: Managing Conflict Within Groups

New Features on Word Press

Friday, December 28th, 2007

You might be noticing a few new features on your blogs in the next day or two. For instance, when people leave a comment they must now enter two security words. This will help to stop spammers and keep a lot of the “junk” off of the blogs.

The blogs will be down for maintenance on Friday December 28th through no later than Noon on December 29th to help make some of these new security upgrades.

Please let me know if you have questions!

Earning Incentives and the Checklist

Monday, November 19th, 2007

November is already half over! Has your community started to blog? Remember that all communities need to meet minimum thresholds for blogging–that’s how you earn your digital camera. If your community wants to work towards the other incentives–the printer and computer, you need to make sure you are working on those goals. (See the blog checklist here).

It’s great to see communities adding posts about events, projects, etc. But we would also like to dig a little deeper to see how your community is changing. Check out the sidebar for the Outcomes Grid-Long Version–it is also included in the Blog User’s Guide you may have received at the Blog Trainings. There are several questions that will help you write about the changes in your community. Happy blogging!

Horizons I Communities Joining the Blogs!

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

The Horizons I communities of Timber Lake, Isabel and Dupree will be joining us on the blogs! A training has been scheduled for December 5th in Timber Lake at 7:00 MT at the Community Center. We will be using their community Wi-Fi.

Timber Lake was given a $393,309 USDA RUS Community Connect Grant in 2005, to be able to provide Wi-Fi access to their entire community. Another example of how big projects can get accomplished in communities!

I’ve added the Horizon’s I communities to the side bar, make sure to check back later this year to see what they have added.

Miss Seeing the Faces of Your Horizons Staff?

How Are You Promoting Your Blog?

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Want some help promoting your blog? Try watching the screencasts on how to promote your blog at:  http://communityblogs.us/screencasts/promote-your-blog/. Some of the ideas that Griff Wigley shares with us include:

  • E-mail announcements
  • Follow up with Study Circles and LeadershipPlenty participants
  • Business card sized handouts
  • Links to and from other community sites

More ideas with potential:

  • Newspaper articles (here’s an example from Newell’s The Valley Irrigator)
  •  Some of our communities are doing “Blog Nights” at local school computer labs.
  • Offer freebies! How about a free “community mousepad” for bloggers who come to a blog night.
  • Prize giveaways! Everyone who signs up as a user and makes a post gets their name entered in a drawing for a fabulous community-based prize.

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan for promoting your community blogs, be creative and don’t forget you have Horizons funds that can help to support these efforts (advertising, printing, food, supplies, promotional items, etc.)

Has your community come up with a great idea? Let us know about it by adding a comment to this message!

Ideas…Host a Monthly Blog Night in Your Community

Monday, October 8th, 2007

At our Tyndall blog training we came up with an idea to get input from people in the community and to add more content to your blogs as you work toward the incentives:

Using a community facility with internet access (schools, libraries etc.) host an Open House Blog Night, where people can come in for a snack, write a post and/or use the new cameras and tripods to create short videos of themselves talking about Horizons, community change, hopes for the future, etc.

You can use your $5000 Community Budgets for the Community Visioning & Strategic Planning phase to support these events. It would be a great chance for people without internet access or technology know how to make sure they are included. Ask teens and tech savvy residents to help make these events a success!

Great Job Bloggers!

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Wow, we’ve seen some great content added to some of the blogs already! Check out Oldham and Sanborn Central as some great examples of blog posts. They definitely get the gold star for this week! Keep up the good work!

Twenty-four communities and 1230 people completed the Horizons Study Circle process in the Spring of 2007.  Discussions of poverty and positive change ideas for communities caused great enthusiasm and motivation to move forward on many exciting action projects.  Using self-reported surveys, participants show an increase in their awareness, understanding and motivation to work on poverty.
